Best Things to Do for Couples in Marshfield, MA
Marshfield is an easy place to travel as a pair. The distances are short, the scenery does much of the work, and the best plans are rarely complicated: coffee before the beach, a paddle when the tide is right, oysters as the light changes, then a dinner worth lingering over. Most of what follows is within about 25 minutes of the Rexhame area; drive times are from there.
This is a couples' cut of our Marshfield Local's Guide, not a separate directory. We have favored places that leave room to talk — a marsh at sunset, a small dining room, a tandem kayak, a harbor cruise — and included Duxbury, Scituate, and Plymouth where the surrounding towns plainly add to a Marshfield stay. Every out-of-town entry is labeled.
Start with the Light
Rexhame Beach at Sunset
Begin with the simplest date in Marshfield. Rexhame is two beaches on one narrow barrier strip: Atlantic surf on the ocean side and the South River and its salt marsh through the dune paths on the other. Swim or walk first, then cross to the river side as the sun drops over the marsh. In season, non-resident parking falls to $10 after 5 PM, which makes this an unusually easy evening plan — no reservation, no schedule, and no reason to hurry away.
Coast Guard Hill
For a shorter walk with a bigger view, take the short trail up the former Coast Guard property, about five minutes from Rexhame. It opens onto Rexhame, Humarock, the South River, and Massachusetts Bay. There is no ticket and no itinerary to manage — just go when the light is good, stay long enough to watch it change, and let this be the pre-dinner walk.
Pilgrim Belle Harbor & Sunset Cruises — Plymouth
The Pilgrim Belle turns Plymouth Harbor into the evening's setting. Captain John Boats runs roughly two-hour cruises aboard an old-fashioned paddlewheel boat, with drinks available aboard. It is an easy warm-afternoon or sunset outing when a full whale-watch expedition feels like too much, and it pairs naturally with dinner or a waterfront walk in Plymouth afterward. Book ahead online; cruises run in season.
Dinner Worth Dressing For
The Winsor House at Island Creek Oyster Farm — Duxbury
The obvious first reservation. An 1803 house at the oyster farm — fireplaces, low light, Island Creek oysters, crudo, and cocktails — about 18–20 minutes from Rexhame. Book it for the anniversary, the birthday, or the last night of the trip; our Marshfield restaurants guide gives it the full write-up.
The Salt Marsh Bistro and Bar — Scituate
The one serious dinner to book if you book only one: chef-driven, seasonal New England cooking on New Driftway in Scituate, about 18–20 minutes from Rexhame. It is the special-occasion table — the name we give another cook who asks where to eat. Full notes in our restaurants guide. One piece of timing matters: the Bistro has announced it will close permanently on October 31, 2026 — book it before the month ends.
Liv Creative Cuisine
Farm-to-table New American on Ocean Street, about 10–12 minutes from Rexhame, with a menu that moves with the farms — start with the loaded baked-potato gnocchi or the buffalo shrimp and let the small room do the rest. Open Wednesday–Saturday only, reservations by phone, so plan this one early in the week. Details in our restaurants guide.
The Sun Tavern — Duxbury
A 1741 farmhouse with a fireplace, in Duxbury, about 17–20 minutes away — steak, scallops, duck, and lobster ravioli in a room that feels a world away from the beach crowds. Our cold-weather date night: open Tuesday–Sunday (closed Mondays), reservations recommended. More in our restaurants guide.
Bluefish River Tavern — Duxbury
Our best all-around neighborhood restaurant, and the answer when you want date-night quality with tavern ease. Bluefish River Tavern runs a broad menu and executes it consistently. About 17–20 minutes from Rexhame, it is a really good dinner without making an expedition of the evening. The full set of tables, including the casual lunches and seafood shacks, is in our Marshfield restaurants guide.
On the Water, Together
Yup Sup on the South River
Rent a tandem kayak — or separate kayaks and paddleboards — from Yup Sup's dock at 1248 Ferry Street, about 10 minutes from Rexhame, and launch directly into the South River. Rentals run May through October; reserve online or by text ahead, especially on summer weekends. The memorable version is one of their sunrise or sunset tours, which require advance reservations. Ask the dock team to steer you to the right tide window, then read our South River kayaking guide before you go.
The Raw Bar at Island Creek Oyster Farm — Duxbury
The waterfront date that needs no plan beyond a fair evening: oysters shucked steps from where they grew, outdoor seats on Duxbury Bay, and the light going down over the water. Arrive early enough to stay for sunset — about 18–20 minutes from Rexhame. Seasonal and weather-dependent, so check hours first; our restaurants guide has the full entry.
Roht Marine & The Boathouse
Drinks on a working North River marina, about 15 minutes from Rexhame: a cocktail at the Boathouse bar while the boats move with the tide, and no reason to hurry off. The motorized version of the same date — the property rents boats, pontoons included — suits a double date or a small group better than two people alone.
Music After Dinner
Levitate Backyard & Rexicana Surf Cantina
Levitate Backyard is Marshfield's easiest evening plan: an outdoor stage at 1871 Ocean Street, about 10 minutes from Rexhame, with daily après-beach acoustic sets, ticketed shows, tacos, and margaritas. Its season runs May through December. Walk in after the beach or dinner, see who is playing, and stay for one more set than you planned. Daily acoustic sets are the drop-in option; headline shows are ticketed, so check the calendar first.
The Jetty
For a later, looser night in Brant Rock, The Jetty is a seaside surf-shack restaurant and bar about eight minutes from Rexhame. It has live music every weekend and late hours until 1 AM on Fridays and Saturdays. This is not the quiet-table choice; it is the place to end the night by the ocean when neither of you is ready for it to be over.
Slow Mornings & Long Walks
SlackTide Coffee Roasters
When the coffee matters, start here: espresso and properly made coffee on Ocean Street, about 10 minutes from Rexhame, plus a panini-style breakfast, open 7am–3pm daily. Then the beach, a sanctuary trail, or nowhere in particular.
The Coffee Shack
A Green Harbor ritual, about 12 minutes from Rexhame: hand-cut donuts, muffins, and breakfast sandwiches. Go early — the homemade treats sell out — and make it the start of a harbor walk rather than a rushed errand.
Daniel Webster Wildlife Sanctuary
Mass Audubon's 576-acre sanctuary pairs grasslands, wetlands, and woodland with 3.5 miles of trails, observation platforms, and excellent bird and wildlife viewing. It is about 15 minutes from Rexhame, free for Mass Audubon members, with a small fee for nonmembers. Go at dawn or near sunset if you can; either end of the day gives the place back to the birds and makes an ordinary walk feel deliberately chosen.
North River Wildlife Sanctuary & the Bridle Path
For the quieter version, North River Wildlife Sanctuary offers 225 acres and more than two miles of trails through salt marsh and woods, plus a riverside viewing platform where seals can sometimes be seen. Closer and simpler, the Bridle Path / Rail Trail is a mostly flat, quiet former railroad alignment from Marshfield Center toward Marshfield Hills, with a pedestrian bridge over the South River — an easy, car-free walk when conversation matters more than distance.
Farfar's Danish Ice Cream Shop — Duxbury
End a slow day with the sweet stop: Danish-style ice cream made fresh on site since 1979, at a local-family institution about 20 minutes away in Duxbury. Go after dinner, or make it the whole point of an early-evening drive.
Day Trips for Two
Island Creek Oysters Farm Tour — Duxbury
Visit the hatchery, boat around Duxbury Bay, learn how Island Creek oysters are farmed, then shuck and taste them at the source. Tours run from mid-May through September, several times daily, and should be booked ahead online; weekends sell out. Allow 2–4 hours, and leave time afterward for the Raw Bar or dinner at the Winsor House — the farm can carry an entire Duxbury date if you let it.
Whale Watching — Plymouth
Captain John Boats heads from Plymouth Harbor across Cape Cod Bay toward Stellwagen Bank with naturalists aboard. Trips run about 3.5–4 hours, late spring through fall, and adult fares start around $74. Peak sailings are usually around 9 AM and 2 PM and should be booked ahead online. It is long enough to feel like an expedition and unlike anything else on this page — the shared day out you will still be talking about at dinner.
Historic Plymouth, Then the Ghost Tour
Plymouth rewards an unhurried pairing. Start with Pilgrim Hall Museum, Burial Hill, and the historic streets behind the waterfront: Pilgrim Hall displays actual historic objects associated with Mayflower passengers rather than recreated environments, and the full cluster deserves about 3–4 hours. After dark, the Plymouth Ghost & History Tour leaves from 65 Main Street at 7 PM for a lantern-lit, roughly two-hour walk combining local history with supernatural storytelling. It is especially good in October, and October dates go first.
Three Ways to Build the Day
- The Marshfield classic: SlackTide in the morning, Daniel Webster Wildlife Sanctuary late in the day, sunset on Rexhame's river side, then a reserved dinner at Liv or the Salt Marsh Bistro (closing October 31, 2026).
- The Duxbury oyster day: book the Island Creek farm tour, stay for oysters at the Raw Bar as the light changes, and either make the Winsor House the main event that night or save it for the trip's final dinner.
- The Plymouth evening: give the afternoon to Pilgrim Hall and Burial Hill, take the Pilgrim Belle around the harbor, and stay after dark for the ghost tour in October — or trade the ghost walk for a long harbor-side dinner in summer.
Good to Know Before You Go
- Reserve the anchors. Winsor House and the other serious dinner tables fill on summer weekends; Liv is open Wednesday–Saturday only and takes reservations by phone; The Sun Tavern now serves dinner Tuesday–Sunday (closed Mondays).
- Let the tide set the paddle. Yup Sup's sunrise and sunset tours need advance reservations, and the dock team — not a generic tide chart alone — is the right source for your outing's best window.
- Seasonality is real. The Raw Bar is a warm-weather, outdoor experience; Pilgrim Belle cruises, whale watching, and the Island Creek farm tour are also seasonal. Check the operator before building a special day around one.
- Sunset has a practical side at Rexhame. In season, the after-5 PM non-resident parking rate is $10, but town fees can change by season — confirm the current schedule before you go.
